Association of ARRDC3 and NFIA variants with bovine congestive heart failure in feedlot cattle

Background: Bovine congestive heart failure (BCHF) has become increasingly prevalent among feedlot cattle in the Western Great Plains of North America with up to 7% mortality affected herds. BCHF is an untreatable complex condition involving pulmonary hypertension that culminates right ventricular and death. Genes associated have not been previously identified. Our aim was search for genomic regions this disease. Methods: A retrospective, matched case-control design 102 clinical cases their unaffected pen mates used a genome-wide association study. Paired nominal data from approximately 560,000 filtered single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed McNemar’s test. Results: The most significant arrestin domain-containing protein 3 gene (ARRDC3), followed by nuclear factor IA (NFIA, mid-p-values, 1x10-8 2x10-7, respectively). Animals homozygous risk alleles at either eight-fold more likely than without those (CI95 = 3-17). both genes 28-fold all others (p-value 1x10-7, CI95 4-206). linked missense variant ARRDC3 (C182Y) represents potential functional as C182 codon conserved other jawed vertebrate species observed. DNA test two markers showed 29% of 273 had genes, compared 2.5% 198 similar cattle. This may be useful identifying animals highest environments described here. Conclusions: Although pathogenic roles and NFIA variants are unknown, discovery facilitates classifying genetic allows producers make informed decisions selective breeding animal health management.
